TPC Colorado

TPC Colorado at Heron Lakes is the first new build to be commissioned by the TPC group for over 6 years. Architect Art Schaupeter was appointed by the owner to design a championship golf course fit for the PGA Tour and when the TPC group then became involved, the importance of getting the project right became paramount.

Schaupeter had first encountered Durabunker at Tennessee National GC, and having had conversations with the owner at The TPC Colorado regarding his love of the sod wall style of bunker, Art recommended that the bunkers at Tennessee National be used as a template to realize the golf course owners love of ‘Scottish Style Bunkers’ to life.

Durabunker MD, Rhydian Lewis, travelled to site in the Summer of 2016 to train the on site contractors, and collaborated with Schaupeter, regarding the design and construction of Durabunker. In total approximately 35 sod wall bunkers have been built with the course due to open in 2018.

The bunkers at Tennessee National were very similar to what I envisioned at the TPC Colorado. Following dialogue with Durabunker, and discussion with the ownership group, it was decided that the Durabunker option would enable us to build sod wall bunkers without the inherent problems that traditional construction with natural turf brings. Rhydian Lewis, Founder of Durabunker Ltd, was on site to oversee the initial stages of the install and to work with our contractors, ensuring that the quality of install was as expected. His input into the bunker aspect of the project was valuable and it was clear that his presence on site would benefit the install of Durabunker and ultimately the final outcomes. The bunkers built to this point look fantastic and are absolutely in line with what I hoped. I’m sure Durabunker will prove a sustainable and cost effective method of building bunkers at TPC Colorado
